Leeds & Reading get under way

27th August 2005 - 15:13

The Reading and Leeds music festivals are under way with 120,000 fans enjoying many of the world’s top bands.

Headliners at the three-day twin shows are The Pixies, heavy metal veterans Iron Maiden and Foo Fighters.

Marilyn Manson, The Coral and Kings of Leon are among the other highlights at the events, held at Little Johns Farm, Reading, and Bramham Park, Wetherby.

Fans have had to contend with muddier campsites than last year after heavy rainfall in the past week.

The main stage line-up also includes indie band Elbow, The Charlatans and veteran rocker Iggy Pop, backed by his band the Stooges.

Iron Maiden are performing at the event for the first time in 23 years, in their only UK summer festival appearance.

Away from the main stage, the headliners on the NME/BBC Radio 1 stage include Kasabian, The Tears and Mercury Prize nominees Bloc Party.

Other acts include US rockers the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, acclaimed Canadian indie band The Arcade Fire and Juliette and The Licks – fronted by Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis.

Police have warned campers to remain vigilant against thieves who may target the events.
