Glastonbury to be a mud bath, so say the ‘weather experts’

18th June 2007 - 15:04

Weather experts are predicting a mud bath at this weeks Glastonbury Festival, which takes place at Worthy Farm in Somerset.

Forecasters warn that persistent rain throughout this week will guarantee mud for the second time running.  In 2005, a months rain fell in less than 2 hours and more than 300 tents were washed away.

Festival organisers have spent more than £750,000 on new barriers to prevent anything like that happening again.

Speaking to The Times, Stephen Davenport, senior meteorologist for MeteoGroup UK, said the amount of surface water set to build up this week means mud baths are inevitable.

He said: “With the amount of rain that is about to fall in Somerset, it will be a mudfest.

“With heavy showers around today, and maybe thunderstorms, there will be more rain soon moving in tomorrow, heavy in the afternoon with thunderstorms again possible.

“We could be looking at a total of 60mm to 80mm (2.4in to 3.1in) of rain between now and the weekend - that’s quite a deluge, so mudbath ahoy. Local flooding is likely.”

Dunno what everyone’s making a fuss about, I’m sat at worthy farm in my speedo’s drinking a Mojito listening to club tropicana writing this on my laptop… It’s 35 degrees and the removal of my trunks means it’s gonna get much hotter…

I live in Glastonbury town. It has been a surprisingly fine morning contrary to the forcast but feels muggy and a bit like a storm. But I notice that there’s more sun showing on the weather charts the closer we get to the weekend. My mates and I think that we should bring the Law of Attraction to bear: come on, folks, think SUN! What you are focussed on, that is what you’ll get. Besides, I heard this morning whose fault it is if it rains….

Wednesday lunchtime and all down at Worthy Farm and The Levels looks green and lush. We may get a sprinkle so its going to get tacky not swampy. Stephen Davenport get back to your desk.

Live about 10 miles from the festival site.

Beautiful evening with a drying wind. I hope the rain bypasses Pilton and soaks elsewhere.
